Introduction (10 mins.) First, T engages Ss in a brief conversation about what they know about comics. Then, T shows some flashcards of comic books, both old and new. Ss discuss which ones are the most interesting and why. After that, T hands out a set of images of the comic book covers to each S and asks them to rank them from the most attractive/interesting to the last one. Ss compare their ranking with others. T invites volunteers to share their list and explain why they chose that order. Questions:
T introduces the main parts of a comic book, such as panels, speech bubbles, captions, graphics (drawings) and sound effects (onomatopoeia). T shows a comic page and explains each part and how they contribute to the storytelling process. T provides each S with a handout with the main parts of a comic. After that, T hands out a worksheet to each S and asks them to label the parts of well-known comic. Consolidation (10 mins.) Ss match the elements of a comic with the definitions. After that, T hands out two comic pages and asks Ss to determine if some statements about them are true or false. Conclusion (10 mins.) Ss answer a short quiz. 1. What is a "gutter" in a comic? a) A character's catchphrase. b) The space between panels. 2. What is a "panel" in a comic? a) A framed segment. b) A character's speech. 3. What is a "tier" in a comic? a) A box used for narration. b) A row of panels. 4. What is a "speech bubble" in a comic? a) A decorative border around a panel. b) A visual representation of a character's spoken words. 5. What is a "caption" in a comic? a) A title or description of a comic book b) A box of text that provides additional information. Homework: Design a draw a 4-panel comic strip using what they have learned. Introduction (10 mins.) T writes on the board the word “Romance” and elicits from Ss words related to it. T writes the Ss’ answers on the board. Ss take notes. After that, T shows some flashcards of comic books and elicits from Ss the genres. Then, T hands out a set of pictures of the comic books to each S and asks them to label them with the correct genre. Development (20 mins.) T hands out a worksheet to each S and asks them to match the descriptions with the genres. After that, Ss read some dialogues and match them with the comic genres.Consolidation (10 mins.) T asks Ss to choose a genre and write some dialogues for it. Next, illustrate their ideas in some panels. Ss compares their dialogues and drawings with other classmates and draw conclusions. Conclusion (10 mins.) T provides any correction needed on Ss’ production and use of language. Homework: Ss solve a crossword about comic genres. |
