Introduction (5 mins.) T organizes a contest. T asks Ss to think of as many languages as they know and make a list in their notebooks. T asks who wrote a large number of languages, and that S will be the winner. The winner writes their list on the board. Ss take notes. Development (15 mins.) T hands out a worksheet to each S and asks them to read information in a chart and answer some questions. T checks Ss’ answers and provide feedback. Ss read an article about endangered languages around the world and decide if some statements are true or false. Ss check their answers in pairs before feedback. Consolidation (15 mins.) T hands out a worksheet to each pair of Ss and asks them to read an article and match some languages with their characteristics. Then, Ss answer some questions. T invites Ss to share their answers with the class. Conclusion (10 mins.) T reviews key points from the lesson about linguistic diversity and the geographical distribution of languages. T assesses Ss individually through a short quiz that include questions about the countries and their languages discussed during the class. Homework: Research information about countries with a high and very low degree of linguistic diversity. High degree Papua New Guinea: Papua New Guinea is renowned for having the highest linguistic diversity in the world, with over 800 languages spoken. Indonesia: Indonesia boasts over 700 living languages, reflecting the country's vast archipelago and diverse ethnic groups. Nigeria: Nigeria is home to over 500 languages, with English serving as the official language. Low degree Monaco: The official language is French, and French is widely spoken by the population. Andorra: Catalan is the official language, and it is the primary language spoken by the population. Iceland: The official language is Icelandic, which is the mother tongue for most of the population. Introduction (10 mins.) T hangs images on the board and asks Ss if they recognize any. T introduces the term “UNESCO” and asks Ss if they have heard of it. T explains to Ss what UNESCO is and what it does. Ss take notes. Development (20 mins.) T shows Ss a short video related to UNESCO and its goals to spark interest. After that, Ss answer a short quiz. T hands out a worksheet to each S and asks them to complete an article about the UNESCO’s initiatives.T checks Ss’ answers and provide feedback. Consolidation (10 mins.) Ss unscramble some sentences about UNESCO’s initiatives. T checks Ss’ answers and provide feedback. Conclusion (10 mins.) Ss answer a short quiz: 1.
