Lesson plan
Introduction (10 mins.) T starts by greeting Ss using ASL signs for "hello" and "how are you." The signs for "hello" involve waving one dominant flat hand while the sign for "how are you" starts with two thumbs up with bend hands, then thumbs point back towards chest at first, then move them forward, and finally pointing to the person you’re greeting with your index finger. T models these signs clearly, allowing the students to observe the handshapes and movements. List of vocabulary: ASL, Hello, Goodbye, Deaf, Hearing, Sign, Thank you, Okay, Excuse me, and Sorry. Development (20 mins.) T shows some flashcards of the target vocabulary and hangs them on the board and asks Ss if they know their meaning. T makes sure that Ss know the meaning of the vocabulary giving them example sentences. T introduces and explains the first sign (hand shape, hand position, hand movement, facial expressions, details, etc). T shows the sign (in slow motion from the front, left side, right side, and from again). Then, T does the “Sign with me” in ASL to ask Ss to do the sign (practice together). Consolidation (10 mins.) T randomly signs the signs one by one. Ss try to guess which sign is it. T: (make the sign). T: What did I sign? S: “Thank-you”. Conclusion (10 mins.) T hands out a worksheet to Ss and asks them to match the vocabulary with the signs. T checks Ss’ answers and provides feedback. Homework: Ss must learn the ASL alphabet and 1-20 numbers. Introduction (10 mins.) T greets Ss and does a quick review of the previous class’s signs. T use flashcards to elicit signs from the last class. T writes the dialogues on the board (or hangs the flashcards on the board) and asks Ss if they know the purpose of the conversation. Conversation 1: A: Hey! I-love-you! (2 signs) B: Okay. Thank-you. Goodbye. (3 signs) Conversation 2: A: Excuse-me. Sorry. You (pl.) sign? (4 signs) B: Hello. Yes. I sign ASL. (5 signs) Conversation 3: A: They. With us? They hearing? (5 signs) B: No. They deaf. Maybe they with us. (7 signs) Learner tip: To make questions you must raise your eyebrows to show interest or curiosity. Development (20 mins.) T introduces and explains the dialogue (part A and B for each conversation). Then, T shows the signs for each word in slow motion. Then, T does the “Sign with me” in ASL to ask Ss to do the sign (practice together). After that, T checks Ss’ movements and provide feedback. Finally, in pairs students practice the dialogue. T repeats the same procedure with next conversation. Consolidation (10 mins.) T invites volunteers to come to front of the class and perform the dialogues. T checks Ss’ movements and provide feedback. Conclusion (10 mins.) T explains to Ss the “rest position” and its uses. T shows the position and asks Ss to do it. T checks Ss’ movements and provide feedback. |
