Introduction (10 mins.) T greets Ss and discusses the importance of staying updated with language trends. T writes the concept of neologism on the board and provides simple examples. T writes 3 sentences on the board and encourages Ss to identify the neologism in them: "I can't join you for lunch today; I'm feeling a bit hangry." Neologism: Hangry (a blend of "hungry" and "angry"), used to describe the feeling of being irritable or short-tempered due to hunger. "Let's take a selfie to remember this moment." Neologism: Selfie, a term used to describe a photograph taken by oneself, typically with a smartphone or camera. "I have serious FOMO because I missed the party last night." Neologism: FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), used to describe the anxiety or apprehension one feels when they think they are missing out on social events or experiences. T shares a brief overview of how neologisms emerge from modern culture. Development (20 mins.) T hands out a worksheet to each S and asks them to match some neologisms with their meanings. After that, Ss complete some sentences using neologisms. Ss checks their answers in pairs before feedback. Consolidation (10 mins.) T asks Ss to read a short story and identify the neologisms in it. Then, Ss discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using neologisms. T invites volunteers to share the advantages and disadvantages with the class. Conclusion (10 mins.) T distributes a short quiz with multiple-choice questions on the neologisms discussed. T reviews correct answers collectively. Homework: Search examples of neologisms from their own exploration. Introduction (10 mins.) First, T hangs two pictures on the board and encourages Ss to identify which depicts a hacker. Then, T allows Ss to express their ideas. After that, T informs Ss that both pictures represent a hacker. Finally, T explains to them the original and modern meanings. Development (20 mins.) First, Ss solve a crossword to contrast words with original meaning with the modern one. Then, T hands out a worksheet to each S and asks them to match words with their corresponding original and modern meaning. Consolidation (10 mins.) T asks Ss to practice what they have learned completing some sentences with the words given. T invites volunteers to share their answers with the class. Conclusion (10 mins.) T asks Ss to share their thoughts on how the meanings have changed over time. T encourages critical thinking about the impact of these shifts on communication. T reviews key points and encourages Ss to continue exploring shifts in meaning in their daily language use. Discussion Questions: 1. How do you think the changes in meaning of these words might affect communication? 2. Can you think of other words that might have shifted meanings over time? Share examples. Homework: Ss complete some sentence frames with what they have learned. |
