Lead-ins

Flashcards and graphic organizer

​Aim: To introduce the topic.
Preparation: You will need some pictures which are big enough for the class to see.
Procedure
​1. T shows pictures to the Ss for a few minutes. T explains to Ss, that all the activities in the pictures are showing a service that is given to the community.

2. T asks some volunteers to describe the pictures. T draws a web graphic organizer on the board using the Ss’ ideas and thoughts.

Match with words (Flashcards)

Aim: To review vocabulary.
Preparation: You will need some pairs of picture cards and cards where the actions (verbs) are written.​
Procedure
  1. ​T sticks all the verb cards on the board.
  2. T shows the picture cards and asks Ss to match them with the verb cards.

Volunteering activities

​Aim: To match themes and volunteering activities.
Preparation: None
Procedure
  1. T writes a list of themes (animal shelter, environment, school, etc.) on the board.
  2. Ss brainstorm some types of volunteering activities related to themes.

Examples of volunteering activities
Animal shelter
  • Adopt animals.
  • Share adoption profiles on Facebook.
  • Wash animals.
Environment
  • ​Plant trees.
  • Participate in endangered species programs.
  • Organize local park clean-ups.
School
  • Tutor children with disabilities or special needs.
  • Participate in recycling programs.
  • Prepare bulletin boards.
Nursing home
  • Be a companion.
  • Feed seniors.
  • Send out birthday cards.

Language Learning Games

Lose the vowels

​​Aim: To revise the spelling of a list of words.
Preparation: You will need a list of words without vowels.
Procedure
  1. T writes the words, omitting all the vowels, for example:
community            ->        cmmnty
volunteer               ->         vlntr
environmental    ->         nvrnmntl
shelter                     ->         shltr
recycle                     ->         rcycl    
nursing home      ->         nrsng hm
     2.   Ss try to write out all the words in full.

Different groups of words

​​Aim: To revise words from a topic.
Preparation: You will need a list of words.​
Target Language
Help, volunteer, hospital, school, work, senior, homeless, feed, shelter, recycle, nursing home, citizen, fundraiser, tutor, fundraise & neighborhood.
Procedure
  1. T writes a list of words on the board.
  2. T asks Ss to organize the words into at least three groups. It’s not necessary for each group to have the same number of words. Words can go in more than one group. 
  3. Later, Ss compare their groups with others. Ss explain the logic of their groups.

Note
If you write the words on cards, it makes it easier to move them around into different groups.

Silent speaking

​Aim: To focus on pronunciation of some words.
Preparation: Choose a topic you would like the learners to practice.
Procedure
  1. T brainstorm on to the board words related to the topic you have chosen.
  2. T selects one of the words and speaks it silently to the class, moving your mouth as if speaking it, but not making any sound.
  3. T encourages the class to identify the word.
  4. T has the Ss take turns doing the same thing with a partner.

Odd-one-out

​Aim: To revise words from a topic.
Preparation: You will need some groups of words.
Procedure
  1. T writes words in groups of four on the board. In each group, include an odd-one-out –a word which is different from the others.
  2. T asks Ss to tell which one is the odd-one-out in each group and to explain why.
Example of different groups
  1. school – clean – library – park
  2. volunteer – fundraiser – interested – tutor
  3. raise – help – work – citizen
  4. shelter – enthusiastic – responsible – committed
  5. nursing home – care – patient - recycle
