Comparative adjectives - Adjetivos comparativos

Los adjetivos comparativos comparan un sustantivo con otro y nos permiten decir si un sustantivo tiene más o menos una cualidad particular.

My dog runs faster than yours.
My perro corre más rápido que el tuyo.

Los adjetivos comparativos se utilizan en oraciones donde se comparan dos sustantivos, este es el patrón:

Noun (subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (object)

Ejemplos:

The watermelon is bigger than the apple - La sandía es más grande que la manzana.
This place is nicer than my apartment - Este lugar es más lindo que mi apartamento.
The blue jeans are more expensive than the white ones - Los blue jeans son más caros que los blancos.
I was more beautiful than you - Yo era más hermosa que tú.

Superlative adjectives - Adjetivos superlativos

Los adjetivos superlativos se usan en oraciones donde un sustantivo se compara con un grupo de sustantivos. El grupo con el que se está comparando se puede omitir si esta claro el contexto.

The blue whale is the largest animal on earth.
La ballena azul es el animal más grande del mundo.

Noun (subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective [+ group of nouns (object)]

Ejemplos:

Kate is the prettiest girl in her class - Kate es la chica más bonita en su clase.
Those shoes are the most expensive in the store - Esos zapatos son los más caros de la tienda.
You are the best! - ¡Eres la mejor!
Today is the worst day I’ve had in a long time - Hoy es el peor día que he tenido en mucho tiempo.

Reglas para formar los adjetivos comparativos y superlativos

Comparativos y superlativos irregulares

Algunos adjetivos tienen formas irregulares en los grados comparativo y superlativo.

Ejemplos:

This is the worst hospital in the city - Este es el peor hospital de la ciudad.
Neptune is the farthest planet from the Sun - Neptuno es el planeta más lejano del Sol.
A mediocre idea that generates enthusiasm will go further than a great idea - Una idea mediocre que genere entusiasmo irá más lejos que una gran idea.
You play golf better than me - Tú juegas golf mejor que yo.
Sometimes the least expensive presents are the best - A veces, los regalos menos costosos son los mejores.

Los adjetivos y pronombres demostrativos en inglés son muy fáciles de aprender. Sin embargo, aunque se escriban igual tienen diferentes usos.

Los demonstratives adjectives se utilizan para determinar la posición de las cosas o personas respecto al hablante y van seguidos de un sustantivo.

	Near (cerca)	Far (lejos)
Singular	This (este/esta)	That (ese/esa, aquel/aquella)
Plural	These (estos/estas)	Those (eso/esa, aquellos/aquellas)

Si el elemento o elementos se encuentran cerca en tiempo y en distancia se utiliza this y these. Si el elemento o elementos se encuentran lejanos en tiempo o distancia, debes utilizar that y those.

Ejemplos:

This apple is mine - Esta manzana es mía.

That book is interesting - Ese libro es interesante.

These cats are just so cute together - Estos gatos son tan lindos juntos.

Those kids are playing baseball - Esos chicos están jugando béisbol.

La referencia también puede ser la proximidad en el tiempo.
Por ejemplo:

The festival ends this Sunday - El festival termina este domingo.
This winter is the coldest - Este invierno es el más frió.
What are you up to these days? - ¿Qué estarás haciendo estos días?
That pizza was delicious - Esa pizza estaba deliciosa.
He really surprised her that time - Realmente la sorprendió aquella/esa vez.

A veces suelen estar acompañados del pronombre one(s) para referimos a un sustantivo contable que se entiende cual es, por el contexto o fue mencionado con anterioridad.
Por ejemplo:

I like that one - Me gusta ése.
She has chosen these ones - Ella ha elegido éstos.

Demonstratives pronouns - Pronombres demostrativos

Los demonstrative pronouns nos sirven para hacer referencia a algo específico en una oración y sustituyen al sustantivo cuando este es muy evidente, por lo que se puede omitir.

Ejemplos

Someone is pointing some shoes in a store - Alguien esta señalando unos zapatos en un tienda

Someone is reading a book - Alguien está leyendo un libro

This is very interesting! - ¡Éste es muy interesante!

Diferencias entre adjetivos y pronombres demostrativos

Los adjetivos demostrativos son los mismos que los pronombres demostrativos, lo que varia es su uso.
Además de que la mayoría de los pronombres demostrativos en español llevan acento.

These are my friends Sophia and Charlotte - Estas son mis amigas Sophia y Charlotte.

¡Cuidado! Podemos decir "This is Sophia and this is Charlotte" pero nunca "These are Sophia and Charlotte".

To tell a story - Contar una historia

This is the story of three little pigs... - Esta es la historia de 3 cerditos...

As a reference to something mentioned earlier - Como una referencia a algo mencionado anteriormente
-You are a nurse, aren't you? - Tú eres una enfermera, ¿verdad?
-That's right. - Es correcto.

To express the way of doing things - Expresar la forma de hacerla cosas

-Don't do it like that. Do it like this. - No lo hagas así. Hazlo así (de esta otra manera).
